New Store Projects: One Skein Cowls

I'm sorry it's taken so long to show off the store knits, we've been up to our ears in work (ie. yarn) and haven't had a chance to breathe, let alone take pictures and publish them.

People often ask me what is my favourite project to knit, and from the samples below it appears to be cowls, mostly because they are a fun way to see how a yarn knits up. Behold, a selection of One Skein Cowls - all freebies, all pretty simple.

Bulky Mobius Cowl

• 1 skein Malabrigo Rasta (lotus)
• 10mm (US15) -36" circular needles
• 1 Jumbo Stitch Marker

Malabrigo Rasta always surprises me. The colourways always knits up lighter, brighter, and prettier than they look in the skein. 

Bulky Ribbed Cowl

• 1 skein Berroco Borealis Tweed (5093)
• 7mm (US10.75)-24" circular needles
• cast on 92 sts

I kinds really love this new yarn, Berroco Borealis Tweed. It is of course soft and very scarf worthy. In the skein the texture looks very consistent, but knit up it has a bit of a mind of it's own (although far from a slubby yarn). It knitted up BEAUTIFULLY, the colour distribution is nice, and the colours really pop. It seems to do well in simple stitches, like a K2P2 rib, stocking stitch, brioche stitch, etc. It's definitely design-worthy (ie. I have a hankering to design with it). 

Easy Mobius Cowl in Borealis

• 1 skein Berroco Borealis (5087)
• 8mm (US11) - 36" circular needles (or 40" to 47")
• 1 jumbo stitch marker
• cast on 60 sts

Like it's cousin, above, Berroco Borealis is soft, has great colour, and knits up beautifully. I don't think the welts in the Easy Mobius Cowl show it off to it's best effect, simple stitches seem to be key (see note above).

Easy Mobius Cowl in Mecha

• 1 skein Malabrigo Mecha (Arapey)
• 8mm (US11) - 36" circular needles (or 40" to 47")
• 1 jumbo stitch marker

This is the second season we've carried Malabrigo Mecha, I was already familiar with it, but clearly not familiar enough because it looks AMAZING worked up in the  Easy Mobius Cowl. Who knew? And like it's cousin Rasta, above,  the colourways always knit up lighter, brighter, and prettier than they look in the skein. 

Long Mobius Cowl in Mecha

• 2 skeins Malabrigo Mecha (arco Iris)
• 8mm (US11) - 36" circular needles (or 40" to 47")
• 1 jumbo stitch marker

Yup, Malabrigo Mecha definitely rocks the Mobius. 

Mini Gaptastic Cowl

• 1 skein Malabrigo Chunky (Milonga)
• 8mm (US11) - 24" circular needles
• 1 jumbo stitch marker
• cast on 51 sts

Good old Malabrigo Chunky, you get the job done every time! Is there anything you can't do?

Spring ... Grignasco Sahara 25% Off

Grignasco Sahara

Grignasco Sahara looks lovely, it's easy + feels great to knit with, and it looks amazing knitted up. Sahara is a soft, luscious fibre blend for Spring + Summer: 20% silk, 40% bamboo, 40% linen. It has a lovely semi-matte sheen and uneven texture that gives it a very modern, very urban texture. It's also discounted (Squee!) because it has been discontinued (Boooo-urns!).

• 4.5 to 5mm needles

Dropped Stitch Spring Cowl

This project is my favourite combination of simple, fast, easy, and deceptively impressive looking. For a snug fit cast on 75 to 80 sts, for something longer that can be wrapped twice cast on 140 to 150 sts (you'll need 4 balls). 

Notes

Initially we started making the Easy 1-Ball Cowl pattern (much cred to the designer!) but made changes to make the most of this very pretty yarn and to make it easy for you to make one too. 

Size
17” wide x 12” high (unstretched)

Materials
2 balls Grignasco Sahara colour 1195 (50g/100m)
5mm-24" circular needles
stitch marker

Abbreviations

K            knit

R            row or round

Rep         repeat

St/s         stitch(es)

YO          yarn over: bring yarn over the needle

Techniques
YO 2 Times (Double Yarn Over)

Directions

Cast on 100 stitches. Join in the round being careful not to twist the stitches, place marker on right needle.

R1 + 2: knit. 

R3: YO 2 times, K1; rep from to end of round.

R4: drop 2 yarn overs, k1; rep from to end of round.

R5 to 7: knit.

Repeat R3 to 7 nine more times.

Repeat R3 to 6 one time.

Bind off loosely. Weave in ends.
