You must know how to cast-on, knit and purl for this class.

Sock Workshop Instuctor Liane Schwarz
Monday April 2 & 9,
6:00-9:00pm

Socks seem hard, but they really aren't (or at least we don't think they have to be). Misti colour card 2

Misti colour 2, originally uploaded by knitomatic.

hee-hee, here it is the second shade card.

i didn't order it but i'm looking at shade 20 thinking it would make some really cool socks (there is a shock of acid green in there at the bottom if you look close. shade 1 would make such a gorgeous baby blanket! 6 is cool, i love the magenta with the orange & red. 8 is interesting too, i love pink with brown, it's a really challenging combo. like camouflage for barbies.

Please note that the scanned colours are not true and that most of the colours arebrighter and have more depth. I have shade cards at the store if you want to look up close.

Misti colour card 1

Misti colour 1, originally uploaded by knitomatic.

This is a bit of a tease, but not too much of a tease ... New yarns to lust & desire .... Misti Baby Alpaca Worsted Handpaints are coming in mid-December! Same great yarn as the solid colours, same great yardage, but multicoloured and handpainted for your pleasure. mmmm, pleasure .....

i've ordered a handfull of the nicest colours(2, 3, 9, 10, 11, 12) but if you want a specific one drop me a line and speak up and I can arrange to special order it for you! On the same tangent, if you want enough to make a garment, let me know and I'll make it happen. Please note that the scanned colours are not true and that most of the colours arebrighter and have more depth. A shadecard is available in the store.

Misti Baby Alpaca Worsted Handpaints ~ should cost approx $21

Opal Hundertwasser Sock Yarn ~ $20

New in this week is Opal Hundertwasser Self Patterning sock yarn! These yarns are inpired by the work of Austrian Artist & Sculptor Freidrich Hundertwasser. Apparently Hundertwasser always wore two different coloured socks! A free spirit, I like that. I'm working on getting the sideways sock pattern seen in the picture, I'll post it as soon as i get it. One ball makes a pair of socks.

I like this book. It won't suit everyone, but it's a great book for people who aren't really heavily into knitting but want to pick up their needles one a year & make a classic, simple sweater. My mom is one of those people and I'm giving her a copy tonight!

Cherry Tree Hill Sock Yarn

cherry tree sock, originally uploaded by knitomatic.

My Faveourite new arrival is the Cherry Tree Hill Merino Sock Yarn. I've been hearing great things about this yarn from clients for ages and now that i've got it in my hands i understand why. The merino is really high quality, it's super soft (softer than Koigu & softer than Fleece Artist) and they dye is also high quality, bright colours, very distinct painting, nothing muddy. Love it! 1 skein makes a pair of socks. 383m

joy

joy, originally uploaded by knitomatic.

Happy-Happy! Joy-Joy! Needful Joy has virtually nothing to do with Ren & Stimpy & everything to do with gettin' your knit on. It is soft (merino is as merino does), fluffy, stripes up with a long colourway (that's the 'technical' term for stripey yarn) and felts like crazy. and you know the best part about feltability? Yup, you can spit-felt the ends when you change balls!

My favourite colour is the multi-coloured, carnivalesque one in the upper-right hand corner of the picture. 50g/78m, 17 sts & 20 r on 5mm to 5.5mm needles.

Apparenlt scanners are as tempermental as cameras, but this shrug is one of my favourite patterns from "Romanitc Style" by Jennie Atkinson. The more I look at this book, the more it inspires me. It's pretty, ye-oldee vintage, Lacy McLace. Atkinson is a Rowan designer and the style is concrete, all the pieces are as pretty as a beleaguered princess asleep in a tall tower, no misses. i also really like the home projects (i know i'm in the minorty on this, but i really like making home accessories), think Martha Stewart does doilies. (more riffs on the subject will be posted at frayed at the edges). Softcover.

modern classics

harding 2, originally uploaded by knitomatic.

I really like Louisa Harding's new book "Modern Classics". It's one of my favourite kinds of books, it's focus is exclusively basic, timeless sweater patterns. Louisa knows classic style, she came up through Rowan. These are my favourite because these are the ones I'm always looking for, I always come back to and I always wear. With a foundational pattern you can plug in a wild, colourful yarn and all the work's done for you. You want to modify the pattern, make it shorter or longer or different sleeves or even plopping in a lace or cable motif ... so much the better. These are the patterns I need to have around so I can buy yarns without a designated project or for when i see something in a store and need the base pattern to tweak. A book like this is worth a whole archive of back issues of knitting magazines ... well, very close. Soft cover.
