Fall 2009 Knitscene

The new Fall 2009 Issue of Knitscene has arrived and it's a good issue!

The 'sneak peek' on knitting daily was not particularly representative of the patterns in this issue. This issue has plenty or really nice patterns that you'll want to wear. Many of the styles are simple shapes, vintage and retro inspire(a few 40's and a few early 70's), 4 really nice patterns by Melissa Wehrle, a few great hats, a few great scarves, some nice socks. A few pieces are unwearable, but they are a small minority and don't ruin the experience of the magazine. They've also used some normal sized people as models, which is nice because you can get an idea of how things will actually look on you. There are also some very useful articles on how to read lace charts and how to count rows between crosses in a cable (I need to learn this one in particular!).

New Books for Making Gifts

Yeah, I know holiday knitting is the furthest thing from your mind
right now, but if you want to consolidate your hobby and your gift
budgets you will need time on your side, and there's is no time like the present. Plus, the summer is always a good time to take advantage of winter yarns from last year which are reduced to move.

Knitted Gifts by Ann Budd $27.95
Another hit from Interweave Press! This books is a collection of 30
patterns by different designers (Nancy Bush,
Mags Kandis, Pam Allen, VĂ©ronik Avery, Chrissy Gardiner, Marta McCall,
Kathy Merrick, and Kristin Nicholas). The projects are small and
relatively fast, generally at an intermediate skill level. The style is
very Interweave, classic, knitterly with details like cables or lace.
Thre is a range of patterns for women, men, babies and around the
house. Besides the usual hats, mitts, harnd warmers, scarves, and
socks, there are also a very pretty baby blanket, baby bunting, hobby
horse, oven mitts, yarn caddy, and some really pretty ballet slippers.
A very inspiring and useful book to help you on your way with your
holiday knitting. One caveat, there aren't
too many patterns in this book for beginners - if you are an
intermediate beginner and want to learn more skills the book is good,
but it may intimidate newbies.

Crocheted Gifts by Kim Werker $27.95
Finally! A small project book exclusively for crochet! A collection of smallish patterns that are suitable as gifts all year round. Designers include Doris Chan, Kathy
Merrick, Robyn Chachula, and Annie Modesitt. The book moves beyond the scarf into the realms of a really pretty pair of socks, a bolero, a cardigan, a cardie/coat for new moms, a fruit baby hat & booties, a men's hat he'll actually wear, a funky little drawstring bag, a really neat 'chain' shawl a-la Jessica Biffi. There are lots of projects at different skill levels but the majority are accessible to people who are relatively new to crochet.
