New & Yummy
Just thought I'd keep you up on New & Yummy things that have been arriving for the chilly weather:
Brownsheep Company Lamb's Pride Bulky & Worsted
regular and superwash. New Colours for this year plus old favorites. The superwash is also really soft!
Cascade 220
More of the wool, quattro and tweed are on their way!
Fleece Artist Yarns & Kits
check out their kidsilk raglan sweater kit, felted bag kit, needle bag kit, splendid sofa kit, Mo Jacket kit and more. Also take a look at their new colour options!
Manos Del Uruguay
more Manos in the colours you love, plus a couple of new shades this year too, and more cutie-patootie Minnowknits patterns!
Unfortunately, we can't carry everything (we wish we could) but if there's something you want let us know and we can special order it for you lickety split!
Fibre Philanthropy: Knitting for the Homeless
Every Wednesday night during the Stitch 'n Bitch we also host Fibre Philanthropy. People of all ages come and knit scarves, hats, mitts & socks to help Toronto's homeless survive the winter. All finished items are given to the Wychwood Open Door Drop-in Centre for distribution.
We contribute FREE instruction & patterns for these projects and the yarn is also free, donated by generous groups and individuals. All you need to do is bring a pair of needles (the bigger the better, around 9mm or 10mm are good) or you can pick up a reasonably priced set at the store.
So come on down! You can learn how to knit & make a difference!

Sweater Class Blasts Off!
On the books for a while now, the long awaited SWEATER CLASS is coming to fruition.
WHO: This will be a class for people who've never knit a sweater or who are still a bit daunted by sweater projects. We will complete a sweater from start to finish together.
DATE & TIME: Sunday mornings from 10:30am to 12pm
PROJECT: we will all be working on a basic raglan sweater knit in the round. For ease & economy we'll be special ordering "KidSilk Raglan" kits from Fleece Artist, so when you sign up for the class you will order yours in your preferred colourway. we'll be working on the same pattern so everyone is on the same page but you can always emend the pattern to suit your style: make it a cardigan, change the neckline, change the hem or cuffs. The yarn is a really lovely & affordable hand dyed blend of kid mohair and silk - nice to wear and to knit with. It's also not too thick or too thin.
COST: $10/hour for class time (approx 5 weeks, 1.5 hours per week = $75) plus $80 for the kit. Needles and notions are extra, plus applicable taxes.
PREREQUISITES: you must have basic knitting skills to attend this class. you should be able to cast on, knit, purl and cast off on your own and be able to consult a reference book. Knowledge of increasing and decreasing is useful but not necessary, as is reading patterns.
HOW: We already have 3 people committed so we should be able to start within a few weeks. Please e-mail us at knitomatic@gmail.com if you are interested in joining and please don't forget to check the colour chart and choose the colourway for your kit.
To register and guarantee your place in the class you must pay the full cost for the class and the kit.

TTC Knitalong
MEETING UP
If you are registered on the WEST team: Meet at Vienna Home Bakery (626 Queen Street West) by 10 am. Beryl Tsang is your Knit-A-Long marshall.
- Suitable streetcar knitting.
- Cash - unfortunately we can only accept cash for the Knit-A-Long Rabble Cards ($7.50), and you will have to pay for lunch in addition to whatever shopping we do during the day.
- Metropass, or TTC Day Pass -- Day Passes are available at all subway stations and some TTC ticket agents, and cost $8. Or, if you're REALLY organized, 2 adults can share a Family Pass, which costs the same as the Single Day Pass. So if you have a friend coming on the SAME TEAM as you, the two of you can split it as long as you stick together and don't get separated.
- Bottled water, snacks, etc. that you think you might need.
- Camera or digital camera, to document all the fun!
- iPod or other source of music. We are looking into bringing along a portable boombox, so if you have an iPod or favorite CDs to knit to, bring them along! One of our event organizers is bringing her iTrip radio transmitter, so iPod owners can "plug in" and be broadcast on the streetcar as we knit our way to The Naked Sheep.

kid love
this one from WRAP STYLE i LURV too.
it calls for 4 balls of Rowan Kid Silk Haze, which is on sale for 20% off right now
or sub
Madil Kid Seta @ $15/ball
Lana Gatto Mohair Royal @ $12.50/ball.
Lacy McLace
This one is pretty as a picture. it's made with fingering weight yarn, but soooo lovely. from WRAP STYLE
Very-Very
From WRAP STYLE this one is very me, not just because i'm cold all the time. I'd make this brioche stitch one in the Naturally Merino & Fur also, use the claret & grape for a caplet au-moment. otherwise the Debbie Bliss Alpaca & Silk would be yummy, soft, light & just the right warmth. Or go classic elegance and use a soft & smooth Italian merino from Needful Yarns/Filtes King Extra
iro bound
This little wonder from WRAP STYLE is definitely Noro Bound - i totally see it in some of the gorgeous colours & textures in Noro Iro or Noro Transitions.

Knitscene
something for you to peruse: the newsletter for the new knitscene mag from interweave. it isn't in store yet but i'll let you know as soon as it is!
according to Interweave editor Pam Allen this mag is geared towards "style-conscious women who are bored by mass retail uniformity. They are more creative, willing to push the boundaries, and not weighed down by tradition. They view their knitting as a form of personal expression and they like to get funky by merging techniques—incorporating embroidery, sewing, crocheting, and even beading into their knitting." coolio!

Big & Cozy for fall
I want to wear one of these sooooooo bad! to be sure, it's a kit to be .... available Spetember 1st the distributor assures me, from Lily Chin's new yarn & pattern collection. All the colours in this yarn are great, but the black is especially fabulous, it's got this differentiation of colour running through it.
this sweater looks so cozy, fits any body type, can be worn upside down for a big, dramatic collar and is totally in step with fall's trendy oversized look.
pre-order and receive 10% off :-)
New Fall Stole Kit $58
A new kit to knit in summer for fall ... a versatile ribbed stole designed by Teva Durham. It can be worn as a hood, a shawl, a stole or a poncho all-in-one. The ribbed stitch keeps it's shape.
Kit contains pattern and 6 balls Filtes King "Extra" 100% merino wool, a variety of colours are available. Kits fits size M/L, up to 40" bust/size 12. (for XL add an extra ball of yarn in each colour, available in store) - $58
Pick up a kit and run to the cottage!

What's on the Knitomatic Needles
ok, so people are always asking me "what's on your needles?" of course, the best way to explain is to illustrate, sooooooooooo, i set up a blog to 'illustrate' what i'm up to, more or less.

Crochet is our Friend!
Crochet is Your Friend!
Most people don't like to knit in the summer because cotton is hard to work with. Don't give up your craft, just switch over to crochet in the humid weather!
a few reasons why crochet is your friend ....
- Crochet is very affordable; it's perfect with mercerized cotton, which is very reasonably priced, and you do
- Crochet projects don't have to be complicated, they travel well and they work up fast.
- Openwork is very easy in crochet, plus you'll never again be intimidated by crochet finishing instructions in knitting patterns.
- Crochet is hard to learn from a book but easy to learn form a person, and once you understand the basic principles you can do anything!
- Throw in the picture above was my first crochet project ever. It looks like a big, hard project but it's the exact opposite. Its made in squares and then you put the squares together.
and 4 more excellent reasons ....
- Teva Durham's next book will be ALL crochet! Her inspiring knit design book Loop-D-Loop is now available.
- Stitch 'N Bitch Crochet will be available by December 2005.
- The original Stitch Diva Jennifer Hansen's been doing crochet all along
- Intweave press is coming out with 2 bonus magazines this fall, both featuring crochet: Interweave Crochet 2005 and Knitscape
ok, a few more very good reasons...
- Candi Jensen, known for her fabulous crochet books of yummy baby stuff, has some hip little books for adults set to go live in August 2005: Crochet Scarves and Crochet Bags
- Fun & Funky Crochet by Sophie Britten is available in July 2005
- Jane Davis (of Interweave) combines 2 groovy activites in Felted Crochet, coming September 2005
- Kirstin Spurkland is publishing a crochet companion to her first book, Knits from the Heart, Crochet from the Heart in november 2005
